Finals' Night 2017 took place at
the Olde Tavern in Pontefract, where the Wanderers regained the Knockout Cup to add to their League Division One title and
complete the League and Cup double when they defeated their nearest league rivals Flanagan's Army in a thrilling match
by 79 points to 77 and RAFA Vulcan Club produced a tremendous performance to win the Plate Knockout by defeating Division
Two Champions Crofton WMC by a score of 72 points
to 64. The eveing commenced with the Plate Final and RAFA Vulcan raced into an early lead which they were never to relinquish,
leading by a commanding 38 - 26 at the halfway point and never looking in doubt to lift the Plate trophy, which they duly
completed 72-64. Questions for the two finals were read by Dave Bill of Redtooth Quiz, who has been playing in the league
for the Golden Lion Dudes this current season.
This
was followed by the main event of the even, the Five Towns' Quiz League's 'Old Firm' match of Flanagan's
Army vs Wanderers and this was an altogether tighter affair, with Wanderers taking an early lead fluctuating between around
1 and 4 points, but then they had an uncharacteristic bad written round at Round 5, which they lost 5-10 and found themselves
1 point behind at the break.
But during
the second half they reasserted their authority and regained the 3-4 point lead and bar one slip in the last round which made
for a breathless last couple of questions, they finished by triumphing by the narrow margin of 79-77, one of the closer Finals
in the FTQL's history. The event was punctuated by refreshments prepared by the hosting pub and the presentation of the
trophies for the season, including the Division One shield and Knockout Cup to Wanderers, the Division Two shield to Crofton
WMC, the individual competition prizes to TV Egghead Barry Simmons of Wanderers and Steve Clarke of the G-Fivers.
The League's annual Spirit of the Game trophy which is voted for
by all qualified players in the league for the current season, was won by and awarded to for this season to Debby Apsland
of Leading Ladies and Leading Ladies also won the 'Members' Draw', which wins them a free season's league
fees for next season. There evening concluded with a raffle and a short address by the Secretary where he thanked everybody
who was due thanks and he himself was thanked on behaf of the members by Mick Edwards of the RAFA Vulcan Club. The Secretary
sold his humorous Finals' Night Match programme which features satirical articles and profiles of the players from the
teams in the Finals amongst other things. The cover of the programme, which normally features a spoof of something from
popular culture such as a famous album cover was this year themed on the movie poster for the 1996 movie Trainspotting.
