Gone but not forgotten - Tony Davies

GBNF/TonyDavies.jpg

Tony Davies - Tony was a very longstanding member of the Featherstone Phoenix team as it is called now, that started in the Five Towns' Quiz League in 1995 and he passed through almost every incarnation of that team in its evolution over the years, playing in fully eighteen Five Towns' Quiz League seasons up to 2012-13, amassing a total of 197 league appearances in the process, so you can see what a committed and interested quizzer he was.  I remember him being absolutely made up when in 2011 he won the Handicap Night Pairs competition partnered by our very own television superstar Egghead Barry Simmons, simply because of the fact of Barry being said superstar.  Tony played in more than one successful Featherstone Hotel team, winning the Second Division more than once and also the Handicap Cup and Plate competitions.

Tony was a charge nurse at Pontefract General Infirmary as I am led to understand, being therefore a work colleague of Meryl Currie, with whom he started the Featherstone Hotel team and also a bit of a Featherstone Rovers supporter, as you will be able to tell from the picture attached to this obituary, where he is obviously wearing his away shirt!

Tony retired from quizzing in 2013 when he wasn't well and had a couple of years of illness before he sadly left us for good in late 2017.  He had a very nice and well attended funeral at Featherstone Methodist Chapel, led by a Minister I myself know very well, Sandra Heap from Pontefract.

Tony Davies - died 2017
