The Five Towns Quiz League is very
sad to have to report the passing of recent former team Captain and player Mary Clifford. Mary played in the Five Towns Quiz League from 2005-06 and up to the end of
2021-22 when she retired from playing had amassed 242 league appearances in the FTQL in over half the league's existence.
That is some record and starting in 2005 she played most games in all those seasons that she took part. Her most recent
team was the Pontefract Cakes who played out of the Hope & Anchor in Pontefract. As a lot of you will know, particularly if you are a Castleford supp-orter
as I am, Mary was also a mad keen Cas fan and in fact sponsored a player every season over a number of years. She had
something of a legend about her at Wheldon Road and legend has
it that her Castleford scarf, which has been to more Cas games than I don't know what, was an even keener fan than Mary!
Her passing has also been mentioned on the Castleford Tigers Supporters Club Facebook page along with the replaying of a video
where she extols the virtues of supporting Castleford Tigers. Mary's funeral will take place next Wednesday, 29 May 2024 at 1.40pm at
Pontefract Crematorium. Anyone is welcome to attend.
